The story of Erika Castellanos is not a common story but she’s also not the only one among the population who are discriminated against and stigmatised because of AIDS or sexual orientation. A native of Belize (a country which up until just a few months ago punished “non-traditional” sexual encounters by up to 10 years of prison), she had felt uncomfortable as a boy since she was young. She escaped from the country at the age of 16 and became a prostitute to survive, took drugs, ended up in prison and became infected with the AIDS virus. Over time and thanks to different programmes, she became one of the most outspoken voices for the LGTBI community in Latin America and the Caribbean. We wanted her to come to Madrid to meet her and spend a few days with her. And her story reached many people through reports in Eldiario.es, Cadena SER, RNE, El País and PlayGround.
